Idea description
Estimate the irreducible rejection caused by missing within-block information, then use it to choose the block's conditioning order instead of tuning block length blindly. If the estimated floor is high, expose one or more realized tokens before continuing; if the floor is low but observed rejection is high, spend compute on improving the drafter.
Formulas
Mathematical statement
For an anchor context and hidden within-block path variable Z_r, let p_{Z_r} be the target next-token distribution after the path information available at conditioning order r, and let q be a proposal distribution constrained to use only the anchor's observable information. Total variation is TV(p,q)=1/2 sum_x |p(x)-q(x)|. The information floor at conditioning order r is F_r=min_q E_{Z_r}[TV(p_{Z_r},q)], while the model gap of a learned drafter q_theta is G_r=E_{Z_r}[TV(p_{Z_r},q_theta)]-F_r. The paper's decomposition is observed rejection = information floor + model gap. For each r, estimate the shared optimizer with the empirical barycenter q_hat(x)=B^{-1} sum_b p_{Z_r^(b)}(x), then estimate F_r by average TV to q_hat. The adaptive policy selects more sequential conditioning whenever F_r exceeds a threshold.
Implementation notes
Integrate this into speculative decoding immediately after the target model verifies a draft block, using target logits already computed for accepted and rejected positions. For each anchor context, collect B short target rollouts with different sampled within-block paths. For every conditioning order r, form the target distributions p_{Z_r^(b)} at the next draft slot and estimate the shared proposal with q_hat_r(x)=B^{-1} sum_b p_{Z_r^(b)}(x). Compute the estimated floor F_hat_r as the mean total-variation distance to q_hat_r. Evaluate the current drafter distribution q_theta on the same paths and compute R_hat_r=B^{-1} sum_b TV(p_{Z_r^(b)},q_theta), then set G_hat_r=max(0,R_hat_r-F_hat_r). The mathematical quantities are F_r, R_r, and G_r; target rollouts, q_hat_r, and thresholds are empirical estimates. At inference, maintain an offline lookup table of F_hat_r indexed by domain, token position, target entropy, and anchor length, or update an exponential moving average online. Before generating a block, choose the largest parallel span whose predicted floor is below tau_F. If all longer spans exceed the threshold, sample one target token, append it to the prefix, and recompute the next span. First test on a 1B--3B target/drafter pair with standard speculative decoding on WikiText-103 and HumanEval. Compare fixed block lengths against this adaptive policy at equal target forward calls. Success means more accepted tokens per target evaluation with unchanged perplexity; a useful target is 10% fewer target evaluations at equal output quality.
Verification
Stage 1 · Toy mechanism gate: Failed ✗
Stage 2 · Mechanism transferred to benchmark: Not tested
Stage 2 · Practical benchmark result: Not run
Methodology: Toy-system gate first; the benchmark stage runs only after a pass. How verification works
Stage 1 — Mechanism check agent confidence 9/10
Built a CPU MVP implementing the empirical floor estimator, TV decomposition, adaptive largest-eligible-span policy, and fixed-span comparison. The decomposition numerically held exactly, but the claimed mean-distribution TV barycenter was not the exact optimizer: its floor exceeded the LP optimum by 0.00554 at B=8, shrinking to 0.00046 at B=128. In the synthetic decoding test, the best adaptive setting matched fixed span 4 rather than improving it; stricter thresholds reduced accepted tokens per target call and increased target calls, so no speedup was observed.
- Agent confidence
- 9/10
- Baseline
- Fixed span 4: 3.036 accepted tokens/target call, 385 target calls, 1169 accepted tokens.
- Idea
- Best adaptive threshold 0.20/0.25: 3.036 accepted tokens/target call, 385 calls, 1169 accepted tokens; threshold 0.16: 2.876 tokens/call and 402 calls. Math decomposition residual was 0.0; proposed mean floor exceeded exact TV-LP floor by 0.00554 (B=8).
Limitations: This is a small synthetic simulation, not a transformer speculative-decoding benchmark on WikiText or HumanEval. It does not measure wall-clock FLOPs, drafter training, perplexity, real target-logit reuse, or an offline/EMA lookup table. The experiment also highlights that the arithmetic mean is not generally the exact TV barycenter, despite being the estimator specified by the idea.
